I Gotta Know

I Gotta Know
I gotta know
Just what's going on this world of ours?
You keep us down
You keep us down
But you know, we'll rise up
Back to that higher ground.
Do you think that we don't see
All the pain and misery
That you could take away today if you wanted t o.
We left it in your hands
We didn't take a stand
You took our trust and you squandered it all for greed.
Power's your only goal
You don't have the soul
To see the human toll
Of the lies you tell
We made you billionaires
You had a chance to share
So don't think that we'll care
When that day comes
So now I know
Yeah, now I know
Just what's going on in this world of ours
Just what's going on in this world of ours
And what we need to do
To change this world of ours.

Nothing happens outside your door
No such thing as society
Politicians drunk on power
Yet all you see is sobriety.
They'll take away what matters most
But give you choice illusion everywhere.
Fifty takeaways down your street
But no beds in intensive care.
Is there nothing going on in that heart of yours?
A single thought occupying your mind?
The world's a stage and each must play our part of course.
But those who see are sometimes the most blind.
They say the enemy's at your door
Send 'em back from where they came.
All that matters is what you have
And that you have someone to blame.
Building walls is easily done
You got one around your mind.
Has it ever occurred to you
That you could be just a little more kind.
Is there nothing going on in that heart of yours?
A single thought occupying your mind?
The world's a stage and each must play our part of course.
But those who see are sometimes the most blind.
Now you're fighting a culture war
In a land that's lost its own
Using phrases that have no meaning.
Passing them off as your own.
When will you get to see?
That the real enemy
Is not the people living lives
Making the best of their humanity.
Is there nothing going on in that heart of yours?
A single thought occupying your mind?
The world's a stage and each must play our part of course.
But those who see are sometimes the most blind.
Those who see are sometimes...
Looking's not seeing
Hearing's not listening....
Those who see are sometimes the most blind...........

Something in the Air

I don't have religion but if I did...
I'd want the world to be a better place.
So if St Peter comes calling, I'm telling him right to his face.
That everywhere around there's something in the air
You can feel it when you walk
You'd better take care
Cos it's coming for you if you don't act real soon.
You're praying to your god but he ain't for hearing
And all this time the world is disappearing
Down a hole they made
That's filled with all of their lies...
A shot rings out in the middle of the night
But you just turn over and out goes the light
On an innocent child
A daughter-less mother cries.
The night sky awakes with shock and awe
And in return for dirty money its rule of their law
But the world just watches all of them as they die.
You're praying to your god but he ain't for hearing
And all this time the world is disappearing
Down a hole they made
That's filled with all of their lies...
On a city street a boy cornered alone
Is taunted for the colour of his skin
A blade is flashed, and one more young life is lost.
Why do we elect these crooks and cheats?
Who won't give the children enough to eat
They just line their pockets
And those of their friends....
You're praying to your god but he ain't for hearing
And all this time the world is disappearing
Down a hole they made
That's filled with all of their lies...
So, if you're watching up there
St Peter take note
Don't take the children it ain't their fault
Take all those people
Who just let 'em die.
And everywhere around there's something in the air
You can feel it when you walk
You'd better take care
Cos it's coming for you if you don't act real soon.
Oh yes it's coming for you
If you don't act real soon.

A Better Way
05:51

In villages, towns and cities we all sit at home.
making ends meet, making do and quietly making tea.
Forgotten by the politicians, exploited by those corporations.
And fed on a diet of reality TV and buy one get one free.
Are we so diff'rent to our fathers working in mines and factories?
Just because We have a Vauxhall Astra, broadband and 5G
Our lives are no more independent than those that came before.
Still in debt and still controlled by those with power and money.
So all that Patriotism what did it do for you? Are you...
Singing Land of Hope and Glory in the food bank queue
Why are we paying rent to The Establishment?
For the land that should belong to me and you.
So much of the country left to rot and to corrode
While the property market benefited those with the right postcode.
Levelling up’s a story of false hope to the neglected
While the MPs guzzle free champagne and fiddled their expenses
The renovation of cities for corporate landlords was a scam.
Converting all the mills and workshops into expensive flats
They sent the working classes to the retail parks, to work…
For the junior suited cohorts of the southern-based fat cats.
So, all that patriotism baby, what did it do for you?
Are you singing Land of Hope and Glory in the food bank queue?
The Bankers in the City well they just take the money and grin.
And the politicians make sure we don't win.
They’re selling rockets and guns to dictatorships just to feed that corporate greed.
While they're underfunding schools and hospitals dismantling the Welfare State
The trickle-down economy never trickles far enough.
So, the patriotic void is filled by those who hate.
While the men in suits keep taking, they want us all to think.
That our lives are worse because of those who came in search of hope
Turning a blind eye to intolerance, they deal the racist card.
While some who wave the flag also carry a hangman’s rope
So, if you're disenchanted look back in history.
And learn how your great grandparents fought Fascist tyranny.
You have that spirit inside you from the darkest days.
Let's send a message to the world that there's a better way.
Throw your arms out to the world.... cos there’s…. gotta be… a better way.

Beyond the Quays
06:48

A gaze across the Liffey as the ships sailed out to sea.
A young dreamer wonders "what's out there for me?"
A night boat to Rio is the chance he awaited.
Adventure at 13, his future created.
Beyond the quays, a new life to live
New friendships to make and new love to give.
A city left behind, but a payment in kind...
With a family beyond the quays.
As the ship docked he thought he'd reached paradise
But familiar accents made him think twice
It was London not Rio where his adventure ended
Discovered by crew and apprehended.
Beyond the quays, a new life to live
New friendships to make and new love to give.
A city left behind, but a payment in kind...
With a family beyond the quays.
The wanderlust stayed with him, for the next few years.
He knew he'd be leaving some day.
With a wife and a baby, he held back the tears
And headed for Liverpool.
Not the end of the story, that was yet to ensue.
A family extended in Birmingham grew
That man was my grandfather, I'll proudly sing his name.
Thomas John Higgins from Dublin he came.
Beyond the quays, a new life to live
New friendships to make and new love to give.
A city left behind, but a payment in kind...
With a family beyond the quays.
You gave me the passion to travel the world.
I know you'd be proud of your part.
As I sit looking over the mountains in Spain
With Birmingham, Dublin, and you....in my heart.
Beyond the quays, a new life to live
New friendships to make and new love to give.
A city left behind, but a payment in kind...
With a family beyond the quays.
A city left behind, but a payment in kind...
With a family beyond the quays

Emma Gee Flowers UK
My music comes from the heart- one that contains love, doubts, burning principles, anger, and hope.
It's country,
blues, Americana, with a smattering of 70s pop. Whatever works to tell the story.
I write because I must. I hope others feel something in my songs too.
I'm originally from Birmingham, England, via Dublin, Ireland, but who knows where my travels will take me.
